Would it be easier to re-install a Big Block with the trans attached, (muncie ) or not attached, and have the motor sitting in the frame with the clutch (aligned) and bell housing attached?? I yanked them both at the same time?
I'll be working solo, but I do have a chain hoist with a remote control to help me. and the car is up on stands . Any info at all would be great, Thanks.Big Block re-installation question

I would think you would be much better off re-installing the motor/trans as a single unit. If you have the trans mounted first you will have to align the input shaft to a dangling very heavy object. If you had an auto trans it would be a different story.

Do you have one of those adjustable bars attached to your hoist so that you can angle the engine any way you want to? That will make the installation much smoother. In any event, you really should have a helper when doing the installation just for safety.

Easier to do as a unit. Trying to align the trans shaft going into the bellhousing while everything is dangling is very difficult. If you are going to do this remove the trans and install the motor with clutch and bellhousing attached. Then install the trans from underneath. I have done this many times and it is pretty easy to do. I usually do it by myself also.

So it's one unit job, I'm getting a little old to be rolling around on the floor with a trans on my chest. Yes I do have an angle bar, which is one of the reasons it came out without much trouble, or ripping the front of the car off when it popped out.
The hoist I have will allow me to set the motor on a floor cart while still being hooked up, so I can install the trans etc. without it swinging around .
Thanks for your input

For me, it's definitely easier to do by myself as a single unit

The job is easly done if you pull the mounting bolts out of the radiator support and tilt it forward to give yourself more room (have the radiator out of the Vette during this process.) Jacking up the rear end will also be of use in the installation.
