I have a Holley red fuel pump. Does it have to be mounted in the vertical postion or can it be mounted horizontally? Also can I mount it near the fuel tank or does it need to be up near the engine?
From everything that I have read electric fuel pumps should always be located as close to the tank as possible and also be mounted lower than the tank in order for them to work the best.
On the Holley "Red" electric pump I do believe that they want it to be mounted in a vertical position but I'm not a 100% on that one.

You need to mount it vertically. It should be as close to the tank as possible - not to the engine. It is recommended that it be mounted at or below the level of the tank, although on a Vette it would be tough to get it mounted above tank level...
I have a 71 that I'm fixing up for a friend. The car doesn't have the original/standard exhaust & mufflers on it now but will shortly. The fuel pump is currently mounted on the pass side of the car right next to the fuel tank but where the passenger side muffler would go. Where is the correct mounting for the fuel pump? I can't imagine the fuel pump would be mounted so close to the muffler.....
So no one with a suggestion? I guess I need to investigate WHY someone added an electric fuel pump when the stock fuel pump is mounted on the engine......

This is what I did..these pumps work on gravity feed from tank..a couple of things I did was install a fuel filter between tank/pump..(I also have a fuel filter just before carb at engine)..I put the regulator to the right of pump simply for access to adjustment on regulator...this meant a longer fuel hose but I felt it was worth it.(hose routes behind tank support, out of view in pic).I also made my own mounting bracket for pump so I could add a rubber bushing to quiet the pump down...the original installation was "hard mounted" and pump was noisy...

Thanks for the pict and response. Where does the muffler go in your picture - I'm afraid of the heat and the fuel pump so close....
Also, why have an electric? Does it replace the regular fuel pump that mounts to the engine or is it in addition to it? Is this a one or the other thing?

First of all, this electric pump feeds a ZZ502/502 in my 69,and was there when I bought it..but the original 7 year old Holley pump started weeping,so I installed a new one in the vertical position vice horizontal...I don't know exactly how long it weeped...but exhaust was not a problem..for reference, the pump is 5 1/2" inboard of the passenger side muffler..I am comfortable with that as there is plenty of air circulation back there...I could have centered it between mufflers, but did not think of heat as a problem...????
The mechanical pump is gone(blanked off at engine block)....and never used on this engine...I'm still running a mechanical pump on my 78 350...

I moved the electric fuel pump more towards the rear passenger seat to get it out of the way of the stock muffler. I had enough hose from the previous install - moves a few things around and it's tucked up there nicely.... Picture may be a little deceiving, there is plenty of space between the muffler and the bottom of the electric fuel pump...
