As it turns out, the main culprit of my new Demon carb leaks were related to the secondary diaphragm. I changed it and checked a few other things and stopped the gasoline shower display. I then started up the 454 behemoth and it ran like it had never run before; crisp and responsive. The Holley that it replaced was bought brand new a short time ago, so it was not a worn out carb. After installing the Demon, I then sent the car to my mechanic, "Rickracer", who worked on some things, as well as observed the performance with the Demon. He is also quite pleased with how much better the engine is running with the Demon carb over the Holley. The Holley was a gas dumping pig and the car was sloppy as hell with it. The Demon I am using is an 850 Mighty Demon w/annular boosters. I don't know how anybody can compare a Holley to a Demon based on what I have experienced. "Rickracer" was the person who advised me to make the switch and I am glad that he did. The difference is astounding, to say the least.
Hype doesn't mean a thing in the real world. Results speak the truth and time always reveals the truth. The Demon wins by KO in first round BLOWOUT!! I will just throw the Holley in the garbage can where it belonged since birth.
The Demon is brand new. I was tired of the Holley and felt that it was worth the experiment to find out the truth about the two carbs. I was hoping that the low rpm sluggishness was carburetor related and man, was I correct!
I am not cruel enough to send the Holley to any members here. I'll just dump it in the garbage where it belongs. The Holley did not even have 500 miles on it. The car never ran correctly with the Holley on it and was always sluggish up until about 2000 rpm's. Originally, I had a dual plane Chevrolet high rise intake but now there is a Weiand TeamG open plenum on it. The Holley was too rich no matter what else was going on. I might even sledge hammer the Holley rubbish in grand ceremonial fashion before the illustrious dumping takes place. Hell, if I get in the mood I might go buy another one at the local speed shop and sledge it right in front of the salesman, just as a statement. Then again, that would support the company that makes the junk even more. As you can tell, I don't have any respect for money and even less for Holley's at this point!
Don't believe the hype. If what you are saying were true, my 454 would not run so much better and it does. "Rickracer" told me that the Demon carbs have far superior machining which allows them to be more accurate. All I know is that the engine runs 100 times better with the Demon than it ever did with the Gas dumping pig, Holley. God bless Barry Grant, even if he does advocate a gasoline shower every now and then to his new partrons.

I had some trouble at first in the form of float adjuster gaskets which led to the carb pissing a 3ft stream of gas. It never showered me but I was more than a little worried that it was going to burst into flames. Anyhow with new, better gaskets and replacing an O-ring that I split (that was bypassing the needle/seat and dumping into the secondaries), it runs like a champ. Started, warmed up, and ran in sub-freezing weather today without a qualm.

edit: I agree you're a little haywire in your hatred of Holleys though They've been on hundreds of thousands of performance cars for decades, you either had a fluke or *ahem* operator error. Still, they can have my Speed Demon when they claw it from my cold, dead grasp

First of all I am glad your car is running good.
Have heard similar stories many times here. Usually it is a 20 year old Holley that was on the car when someone bought it, the motor run like crap. THe guy buys a brand new Demon and now the motor runs great. So are Holley carbs crap or would the car run just as good with a new Holley. A properly tuned Holley would run just as well on your car. Give it to a forum member and he will prove my point
The Holley I have is practically new and NEVER ran anywhere near as well as the Demon. It ran ok from midrange on up but it is an archaic junkpile compared to the Demon. The Demon ran great right out of the box as soon as I fixed the leak. The response right off of idle was sluggish on the Holley and is crisp on the Demon, even when cold. Does anybody else want to tell me how good the Holley is?
Please dont destroy the holley i would be glad to have it. would be glad to buy it and pay shipping.
I think the Holley would be too large for your car. It is an 850 double pumper. I would be willing to give it away to the member who is most in need of it. That is, if I am able to restrain my destructo reflex!

Whats actualy wrong with the holley? Is it something that Lars could cure? I currently have a 750 holley, its one of those with the 4 corner idle ajustments, the mechanic at the shop says its a trick carb. But I wonder if the 750 may be a little small for my modified 454.
From my recent experience I believe the Demon carbs seem to come tuned closer to a "typical" application based on the CFM of the carb. I had to pull *6 sizes* of primary jets out of the 3310 I bought for my LT-1 (10.2 CR) style 355.
If it's not too much of a PITA, how about a quick comparison of jet sizes for the "junk" Holley and the Demon?
