replacing the tach gear and distributor shaft (gears are stripped). How the heck do you get that gear pin out at the bottom???
With a drift pin (like a thin punch) and a ball pein hammer. Note the gear probably has a small "dot" depression on it ... if so, place the dot on the side where the rotor tip is when you press the gear back onto shaft. This phases the gear to the rotor properly ... you may notice the gear has odd number (13) of teeth ... so phasing is important.
before you disassembly you might check the "side to side" play of the shaft at the bottom, as well as look for excessive up and down at the lower gear (shims will cure this) if you feel any it`s time for (at least) a lower bushing. Chances are also good the grease in the top has turned into clay so you might as well change it and the top seal also.

Take a good look at the cross gear thrust surface inside the housing. Most likely the gear has worn a cavity into the cast iron. You probably need to add a thrust button or use the 'setscrew and jam nut' repair method. When you have too much end play the gears strip.
Check for excessive (over .002") shaft side play at the top bushing. Too much clearence there will cause the dwell to "go away".

The primary cause for the gears stripping is that the crossgear hogs itself into the side of the housing. If you do not repair the housing, the new gear and mainshaft will strip right out again. I like to machine a steel insert/washer for the housing to restore the thrust surface without the use of a setscrew sticking out of the side of the housing.
