hi, could anybbody explain to me what's powetrax and when is used? could i use on my '77 vette? is it an added trick for the differential or a differential itself? thanks/Giu
I can't tell you if they make a unit to fit the vette but I can tell you about the unit I installed in my S-10 pickup a few years ago. The unit was very easy to install. In operation it felt like a Detroit Locker; It was very positive but a little noisy. It would seem that you could rebuild the stock posi for the cost of a Powertrax unit.
I have one in my S10 Blazer.
The unit installs in an open carrier housing (non-posi) and replaces the spider gears. While power is applied, both wheels are forced to rotate at the same speed. Under coast conditions, one wheel can rotate slower. Leave from a stop sign and make a turn under acceleration, the inside tire will be squealing. In a high speed turn, if you're on and off the throttle you can feel it engage and disengage. Especially if the tire air pressures are not quite the same on both sides (slightly different diameters.) Occasionally, it will make a loud clunk when engaging or disingaging. Even if they do offer one for the Vette diff, it is a little harsh and I think you'd be happier with the posi clutches. I would be.
