Default Oil cooler

I have a non original radiator in my '69. This rad is from a '73 with auto trans and has an oil cooler for the transmission I do not need in my 4spd.
I am thinking about using the spare oil cooler for the engine oil. Could this work? Having more oil capacity and cooling it additionally sounds good for the use on the german Autobahn. What do I need for such an installation?

I'm not sure the fitting sizes that are typically used for the transmission cooler in radiators is large enough to be used for engine oil. When using stainless steel braided hose to connect an external oil cooler/filter, -12 is the standard size. Even factory external oil cooler use lines and fittings comparable to this size. I just don't think the -06 or or smaller lines and fittings (or comparible) would offer sufficient flow (volume).

Browsing through the Jeg's/Summit catalog, it looks like most oil coolers and adapters use a 1/2" NPT fitting. I think the fitting for a radiator trannsmission cooler is probably a 3/8" or 5/16" fitting. Much smaller.

In my opinion, you'd bem best served by buying a purpose designed/built oil cooler of adequate size for you engine/power.

On a side note, I was over in Germany (Bayern region) and Austria back in May. I was really looking forward to driving on the AUtobahn's but found that they were all under heavy contruction for the most part. I spent as much time doing 60kph as I did doing 160kph...

Well, maybe I leave it as it is. She does 70mph for hours and running faster uses much more fuel....

I agree with Monty. Auto Trans. FLuid pressure is about 30 psi...Engine Oil pressure is as high as 70 psi (stock) ...which means you need bigger hoses and connections to cool the oil than what the radiator trans cooler comes with. The last thing you want to do , is, have too much pressure drop on your oil as its circulating thru your radiator trans . cooler, and coming back to the engine.

I bought a B and M Oil Cooler 8x11" plate type with 1/2" fittings and have it strapped to the front of the radiator - it really works good. 'Theres nothing like a good B.M. '
