Default AC Problem on my 81

Where is my vacum line that allows air to enter the vents when the AC is activated? Do I have to remove the dash again? How do I get to it to repair or change it?

Located under shift plate console, and unfortunately yes, you must remove gauge cluster to remove the consoe. All of the vacuum lines go into the heater / AC control mechanism. Would make sure all hoses are good / solid before replacement of the control mechanism, as you may find it to be rather expensive. Sometimes you may just need to lubricate mechanism with petroleum jelly or something similar to get it to seal up and work properly.

Do a quick check under the hood first. I had the same problem which also sounded like a vacume leak under the dash :mad I swore I had to replace the headlight vacume hoses  I found a tube that wasn't hooked to anything that was part of a T connector. It was a bit smaller than the other hoses and had gotten hard at the fitting and broke off :cry I pulled out the broken piece and slipped the hose back in. Lost the air leak sound under the dash and the a/c worked again.
Good luck,
John

Two thoughts... I don't think you have to remove the center gauges to get to the climate control. Just remove or pull back the two carpet pieces on each side of the center console. If I remember correctly there's just a couple of screws that hold the selector to the console.

Also when I had a vacuum leak in my selector, I'd still get air coming out of the defroster. It was my understanding this vent is open without vacuum pressure while all the other doors are closed.
