Default Air Gap Performer

Need some on advice on air filter /hood (standard small block) clearance with a ZZ4 engine build with an Air Gap Performer manifold and an Holley 4 Barrel Street Avenger carburator.
Thanks

From other posts I have read here, sounds like you have the same questions as I did. Look into a dropbase air cleaner. They say that will work with an AIR GAP or RPM manifold. K&N makes a few Dropbase units, one with 7/8 and one with 1.25 inches.

I have one in my 82, but I also have a bubble in my hood. If you have a flat hood you might have a problem. Do a search, someone was talking about the hood clearance on earlier models. Larry

I talked to a tech at Edelbrock this week about a drop base air cleaner and he told me to forget it. Gotta have lots of air.

The L88 drop base air cleaner works well, allows a nice sized air cleaner to be utilized. Many have done the clay testing to determine the clearance. (try searching the archives....there have been many, many threads on this)

A future goal might be a complete L88 setup:
The L88 cold air system works very well if you want to go that route to pull fresh cold air from the windshield area. This would require a few more components (cold air box, L88 hood, L88 air cleaner, L88 screen, L88 foam, and L88 dropbase).

Is there a sale on the RPM Air Gap? seem to be a hot topic right now:

I would tend to disagree. Most NASCAR engines run a dropbase configuration, knowing that is a little more than what we are discussing here. But your still running a 3" aircleaner. Was the tech implying your AIR FLOW was impeded?.

1 There needs to be about 3/4" CLEARANCE OVER THE TOP OF THE FLOAT BOWL VENT TUBES.

The "standard small block" hood has limited clearance on 68-72.
The Performer 2101 is supposed to be about 1/4" taller than stock.
Weiand Action+ is supposed to be about 3/8" taller than stock.
Performer Air-Gap & EPS about 1/4" taller than Performer 2101.
Carb CFM & the setup should be taken into consideration also.
You should state carb CFM & the setup.

While Cobaltblue 72 did not mention the RPM:
2 Stuffing a RPM under there at any cost & restricting intake is not a great idea as one should consider the entire flow path & affect on the carb. which is probably why Edelbrock says the RPM will not fit under (stock SB 68-72) hood. 2" dropbase is somewhat restrictive.

The aftermarket dropbase filters actually flow very well.
The RPM is about .7" taller than 2101.
The 73-79 med. rise hood allows the Victor Jr, RPM & others on SB w/ aftermarket dropbase filter & Holley.

I also have a K&N filtered top. I think I get the 770 that I need. Larry

Default hood clearance

I have a 72 with base engine hood. I have a z28 intake. Measured the same as an edlebrock in height. It has a demon carb sitting on it with a open drop base filter housing, and K and N filter, low profile. There is about 1/2 inch clearance left. I set my intake and carb set up on the engine and used modleing clay formed in little cones and set them all around the filter cover and slowly closed the hood, to get a good safe measurement. Filter elements with different heights can also be used. Stay well above the vent tube on carb.
