Might try new condensor, they go BAD sometimes, you will still have spark, but will not be good blue spark.Engine will not run good if at all. This happen on my 427 and has happened on all my old Hogs. Also had my plugs, gas foul one time, car was running ok when I ady timing and shut it off then would not restart.Took a week of @#$%^ then finally broke down and put in new plugs.Fired right up and ran like a bandit.I now have gone to an HEI,Davis DUI,much better tech. thean pts.Good luck
I replaced the fuel pump the other day and starter after that. both where shot.....
Another vote for the flooding. Previous pump "shot". New pump may even be higher flow than stock, certainly more pressure than previous pump. First stat-up, everything is fine and pressured. Shut down and residule fuel pressure loads the intake and cylinders with gas. Way flooded. When was last carb rebuild? Suspect float issue.
I doubt very seriously that it is still flooded after a whole day. Definately sounds like a spark problem. Check your power and ground wire at your distributor. Those suckers can easily come loose when messin around down there. Sounds like you may not be gettin the proper juice at the distributor by the way you described it.
Sounds like it "jumped timing", especially with the "ran perfect" and now "tries to start".
Apparently this always happens when an engine is turned off, and you know when you try to restart. New timing chain, tensioner, and gears will fix you up.

Happened with my '68 Cutlass, very embarassing to drive up to a party in a nice vert, and then be the last one left in the parking area because the car won't start.
Likewise, it tried to start, I replaced the starter because it was weak, still wouldn't start...stock timing chain on many GM engines has a plastic outer gear bonded to a steel center. the teeth wear down, the engine jumps time...
So I guess this means you are good now? I see people still speculating as to a cause.
Im good. A couple of people got it right though. The advice is alway good for future events though. You never know or always know there is going to be another problem with a C-3.
