1. 383 450-500HP engine, same torque, 3.55 rear gear. Will the TH350 handle this much or do I need a 2004r? Not a question about overdrive, I know those arguments.
2. If the TH350 will handle it, can I rebuild it myself or would I have a fool for a customer?
If built correctly the 350 will easily handle the HP.I had mine done in 2004,built to handle 900 hp,I have had zero problems in two seasons of drag racing.

If you don't mind me asking...who built it for you and how much did it run? It would be nice to find someone local that I can trust to do it right the first time.

well if you want to rebuild yours i will contemplate rebuilding mine at the same time...at least we will have two people trying it.....what do the parts cost???
edit you know i think i have book on rebuilding this let me go look and see what we are contemplating.....i never did understand fluid dynamics and pressure.....

It will be the fall before I tackle this (If I do). A high perf kit from one place was $250. The special tools could easily be as much. After all that I'd be getting close to what a tranny guy offered (tranny only, I remove & install tranny).
I watched a video on rebuilding a 350 and they guy filled up two big plastic tubs with internal parts. At that point I decided there was too much that could go wrong and I didn't want to pull, rebuild, install and have to do it all over again if I made one simple mistake. Not worth it for the 450.00 shops charge to build a decent transmission (clutches, HD sprag, etc). Putting the TRANSGO shift kit in this weekend was enough for me.........
This is a road I will come to in the future and It posed a few spin off questions for me. For "ratflinger" I do not know what year your car is but I have an '80 and I have been told I will also need to change my torque converter out to a different stall speed. Being my car is an 80 it has a lock up converter so I do not know how that effects the changes. Secondly for " Hvymtlc5 " I have the B&M shift kit sitting on my bench and have been contemplating that install . Could you say how the install went and were the results worth the effort. Brent

I used the TRANSGO kit and the video that came with it was very detailed with excellent views of the parts ...so everything was straight forward. I just brought my portable vcr out to the garage and followed it step by step..if I didn't understand something I just reveresed and watched it again. Very impressed with their hardware...everything you need was included (pan gasket too). Hardest part was working on my back with the valve body. Haven't road tested, because it is still up on the jacks for the brakes...
I have used the B&M kit in the past (way in the past... on a 70 Cuda). It was very docile on the shifts until the car was floored. It would bark the tires on the 1 to 2 shift no problem.

Gerald Cook in Mora,Mn. It cost me about $1300 for a fully rollerized, reverse valve body 350 trans. No covertor. The reason I said 900hp is because his Camaro had 900hp at the time and he was running the same trans, his had a few aluminum parts though.I'll get you his ph # if you like.
I rebuilt a lot of TH350s about 30 years ago. I was a line tech at a Chevy dealer and did all the work on the automatics. Cleanliness is important. A little piece of lint in the valve body can result in big problems.
I'm not sure if I would try rebuilding one at home. 30 years ago I had the advantage of having all the special tools (trans stand, pump slide hammers, seal and bushing installers and clutch spring compressors), but I suppose it could be done
bobs77vette, that's about what my trans guy quoted. I think I'll pass on this 'learning' experience. Mainly I was interested in how much HP the tranny would handle, seems that isn't a problem. Mine's leaking fluid like a sieve, but the engine/tranny rebuild has to wait until fall, so I'll just keep the fluid levels up until then. It's only a weekend river anyway.
bams12, mine is a 79 & yes I will be going to a 2400-2800 stall converter when the engine is rebuilt. Years ago I installed a shift kit in my Z-28. It wasn't difficult and the shifts crisper, but not harsh.
