Generally a 1.5" to 2" drop base cleaner will help alleviate the issues you are having. I happen to be running a Moroso Low profile racing air cleaner, and am considering going to even more drop to get the clearance I need.

The air cleaners from the early C3's work well. I am still using the original on my 68 with a 383. The vent tube needs to be removed and plugged if you are running a double pumper. I used a simple rubber expansion plug.
