Default tach filter

Hi guys, I am new to this forum but I have been following the posts for sometime and as a whole have found you all to be knowlegeable and willing to help. I have been an owner of a "NCRC" 1976 for three years and I am getting to some of the small things that don't work right. My tach has been very eratic since I purchased the car and upon a closer look I can not find the tach filter. Would some one be able to tell me where it should be located? I have been in the car buisness for 34 yrs and have owned a number of muscle cars but this is the first corvette. This car has been the most fun to build and drive of them all. Thank you in advance for any light someone can shed on this question.

Hi, mine is located on a small bracket on top of the intake manifold, drivers side rear, close to the distributor. It is a capacitor about 1 1/2" long with 2 leads coming out of it. My car is a 1979 Vette with a 350.

Someone had done an engine swap before before I purchased the car and it appears to be missing. Does it T into the tach wire or are there connections? Thank you.

There are plastic connectors, they are shaped to fit specific plugs, one obviously goes to the distributor, the other to your tach connection.

on my 76 it is located on the intake manifold just in front and little to the drivers side of the distributor. There should be a wire from the distributor to the filter. Follow the two small wires from under the coil and one goes to the tach filter ( at least it did from the factory).

Here is a link to an AIM sheet ...

Here is a thread where I compare an alternate circuit ...
you can build your own filter - two resistors and
two capacitors from Radio Shack. Soldering skills would help.

Thank you for the info NHvette. I think I will try a couple of salvage yards first, since GM has discontinued that part. I did find one company that makes a reproduction of the filter for $50.

Tach filter on my 76 mounted on intake, see arrow pointing to it. It looks like a condenser inside a distributor. Note: the ground connection is the bolt to the intake.

Yes you can run without it....it stops spikes that can harm your tach...I suggest that one be used though
