I never thought that carpet installation was such a PITA. :mad This has become a sort of family project, since my mom is here helping me with the installation, and we worked on it for 3 days and there's still a lot to do. Lots of trimming required, and worse, the carpet seems to be molded for a car that has a different floor and different seat-belt assembly. As a result, no matter how hard I try the carpet ends up kinda lumpy, wavy. This is particularly true for the area under the seats (I'm not too concerned, since it's not visible) and the wheel wells areas (visible!). So far any attempt to correct this seems futile, and I'm afraid the result will be sort of Bubba'd. :mad
Just venting, but if you guys have any tips, I'd really appreciate it!
From: I can explain it to you, but I can't comprehend it for ya.
Re: Carpet Nightmare (MIKER)
I got mine from The Last Detail and it fit perfectly. Took about 3 hours to install (including ceramic insulation under the carpet).
Pedro, are you sure you were sent the right carpet for your car?
It just seems that it should fit easier than that.
I got it from The Last Detail. The carpet is made by ACC (Auto Custom Carpet), which is the same that most of the vendors sell. Some members had better luck with the carpet kits made by Romeo Engineering (or something like that).
I'm not sure... I know it was not molded for a '74. It has some molded ups and downs that do not agree at all with the floor of my car, or the wheel wells. I don't know if ACC makes year-specific kits, or "generic" kits, but I did specify I wanted a kit for a '74 coupe when I ordered.
Pedro
Same problems with ACC.
I guess it's a hit or miss lately with ACC.
Fit and quality wasn't good.
Sending it back.
Ordered Romeo Engineering carpet.
A great tip on carpet installation is to dry fit it first to see where it works well and where it needs to be trimmed. In addition, setting the carpet in the sun will soften it enough that it is MUCH easier to work with. I never use contact cement because once you put it in, it is locked into position. I always use 3M spray adhesive and I put the two surfaces together before the glue dries and that allows you some time to move the carpet around the floor before it sets.
I'd have sent it back too, but now I'm very close to finishing it, and I can't afford any more downtime. Besides, I bought this carpet kit more than one year ago. Good luck with Romeo's carpet, and keep us posted about its quality.
Gary:
Thanks for the tips! Today is Glue Day, and I'll definitely use your tip of setting the carpet before the glue dries.
It looks like ACC strikes again :mad
It's a real shame that a company that has been such a mainstay in the restoration business for so many years has fallen as far as they have.
About 15 years ago I put ACC carpet in a 68 Camaro, I don't remember having any problems with it. But something must have happened since then.
I have the reciepts for the carpet in my current 'vette, it came from Corvette Central and is probably ACC, it was purchased in 1995 and is so faded that I thought it might have been original carpet when I first saw it. The black has faded to an olive green color. This is in a car that was garaged and covered when not driven.
Thanks for all the tips, guys! I finished the installation yesterday. It was a royal PITA, and the outcome was OK for a driver. The front looks good, storage area looks good, that part behind the seats looks good, but the wheel wells are really funky... :( Anyway, I'm glad this is done, and I'm glad I finally have my car with the complete interior, after more than 1.5 years!
i ordered carpet from Romeo about a month ago...They still havent charged my card, or sent the carpet. I called and left message but got no return....anyone else still waiting? are they real busy?
I called about my carpet yesterday.
Bright blue is a special order so it takes four weeks to get.
I was told my carpet should be delivered the week of 8/27.
That's 5 weeks!
They said they're swamped with orders.
I guess maybe black carpet is common and always in stock where certain colors(special orders) have to be literally made up by them and the process takes 4 weeks.
They manufacture the carpets.
I was also told it takes a few days to put the heel pad on the carpet.
If you get yours first let us know how the quality is and I'll do the same.
Where the carpet needs to be creased and the crease can be hidden (i.e., behind the kickpanels) I made cuts where the crease tends to be. That helped lay the carpet down.
Pedro,
Sorry to hear that you had so much trouble with your carpet installation. I got my ACC carpet through Gary Gruhala and had not a lick of trouble. The moulding of the carpet was perfect, and only required a slight bit of trimming here and there. I would rather trim then not have enough material.

Also ordered carpet from romeo eng about 3weeks ago still waiting for black and he did say he was swamped. Also had problems with acc on a carpet for my 91 blazer. seemed to big and not formed for my vehicle and that was 3 years ago. :p:
My ACC carpet was OK. I had to trim everything but it looks great! I bought mine before the plane crash, maybe quality control might have changed since then.
I installed ACC carpet last winter in my 72 and it fit fairly good. I did save and use the old carpet as a template for the new carpet and trimmed accordingly.
I also installed EZ Cool insualtion under it so there were some tight spots. The fender wells were a bit funky but overall it looks good.
