What other cars that have a higher output Alternator will work on a 75 vette. I need more than the 70 amp i have dual fans upgraded hella 90mm headlights and a stereo system with subs. so i need to know what other cars will work and have a higher amp. My buddy said that a 3rd gen fbody alt would work but i fiqured i would ask.
I'm running an alternator from a 1998 chevy p/u, rated at 140 amps. Wasn't too difficult to adapt to the stock brackets, uses v-belt pully from old unit. You should upgrade the alternator output wire that runs to the distribution lug.
Are you looking for junkyard cheap or warrantied upgrade? JY will be Caddy, high option GM SUV or truck, or high option Buick. Check GMPD web site to determine what amperage goes with what model.
You can get a 105 amp chrome bolt on off of ebay, brand new with a warranty for $100 plus shipping. 140 amp is not that much more. Jegs, Summit, etc. will not be much more either.
wires have already been upgraded so no problem there basically looking for cheap so. the way it sounds a high optioned car or truck or suv is the way to go and just change the pully
I had a 1990 Chevy alternator rated at 105 amps, but upgraded to the 140 after installing the dual spals. I used the 105 as my core replacement at Autozone, they didn't seem to care. It was a whole lot cheaper going this route than buying a 140 amp from jegs. If memory serves it was around $130.00 for their premium 140 amp replacement.
Gator, I read your post on the conversion, nice job. If its finished, have you had any problems overcharging the battery? That is a condition that happens sometimes when you put in a large wire all the way to the battery, it gets a full 14.7 all the time the engine is running.
Just curious

I was in the middle of my re-wire when the Wife and child decided we should move to North Carolina. So now I'm in the middle of moving and it will be a coulple of months before I will know the answer to that question. O.K. more like a year.
No doubt you know what your doing, just wondered how it worked out. I added a 2nd battery to a chevelle and a camaro I used to have and it worked out ok.
