Radar detectors

As for laser, those also have flaws and are quite contestable in court. In most states (I think about 45 of them) there has not be sufficient proof of accuracy demonstrated in case law for laser to be given judicial notice. That is, expert witnesses must be brought to prove the accuracy (if asked for) because no testimony can be cited from case law. Judicial notice for radar is well established in all states but not laser. The police aren't going to tell you that and if you take their word that they accurately measured your speed then that's up to you. Laser may work better in targeting specific vehicles but its weakness is its high resolution measuring ability. You have to hold the gun completely steady to minimize jitter and even that doesn't guarantee that it is jitter free. The jitter will cause the gun to measure the distance to the rapidly moving aim point and it will calculate a speed based off points that can vary 15 ft or so (from the front to the end of your car). It won't get an accurate speed if the jitter has you traveling 10 ft in .01 seconds. At 60 mph you are traveling .88 ft in .01 seconds.
Oh ya, for the 'ticket notifier' and 'your going to get caught anyway' crowd, that's not really true. Granted, sooner or later you will get a ticket but proper use of a detector will save you a ton of tickets. It has easily been 16 to 20 times that I know I would have gotten a ticket had I not known there was a speed trap. There have been many, many more times were it was just doubtful that I would have been the one singled out. Where I drive I can almost guarantee hitting 2 speed traps a week.

(that's a movie reference, bonus points to the first person who figures it out.)
The Police in this town have their laser guns mounted on a tripod to overcome the jitters problem you have described. So someone(s) must have contested a ticket(s) owing to the jitters issue in the past and won.
I just want to add that I have used a "run of the mill" Cobra for the past 6 years, it has detected many speed traps during that time and saved me from countless tickets. The point being is that even a "run of the mill detector" is a thousand times better that none at all and the differences between the current detectors are perhaps incremental and not that significant from the real world perspective. We all know how much value is placed on bench racing, the bullsh*t stops when the speed detector clocks, so to speak and the cutting edge may just be the bleeding edge in this case, the blood coming from our wallets.
