What keeps the cam in the block?

Especially on a later 1 peice RMS block?

I have no info about the block you describe but on a sbc nothing holds the cam in. The rotation of the cam and its gears pull it back instead of towards the front of the engine. I'm thinking that a bbc's cam is different and a cam button is needed to prevent the cam from walking forward and into the timing cover.

das ist nicht eine cam button...what it is, is a cam retaining plate. The cam has a snout, smaller in diameter of the journal, that extends about .25" out of the block, the plate has a hole, the size of the snout, and is placed on the snout, and is retained by two bolts, screwed in front of the block...

i had a kid(friend of my son) call me saying the cam wont come out of his 302,when i got at his house to show him he was bashing it with a small sledge hammer!! i told him to stop and showed him the mech fuel pump and explained about the rod sitting on the cam pushing the flapper to pump the pump,,we took the pump out and the cam slid out,,,he felt like a dumb jack ***

It seems like I read that on flat tappet cams, the lobes are ground with a slight taper so that when the lifters ride the lobe, it pushes the cam toward the rear.

Looks like we have the old and new roller cams covered with retaining plates and cam buttons.
