In the case of an External balance sbc 383/400 ... they have an IMbalanced damper & IMbalanced flywheel/flexplate ... have a large IMbalance hanging off each end of crank. Overall, the rotating assembly is balanced, but there's that IMbalance on each end of crank that tends to twist those crank-ends/snouts & is harder on those ends' bearings.
If possible, go with an internal balance motor/assembly ... one that uses a NEUTRALbalance damper & NEUTRALbalance flywheel/flexplate.
