Default Distributer Problems.

Is it possible for the advance of a distributer to stick? The rotor does not "snap" back. The car will start and runs fine but sometimes when I try to restart it the car it it acts like it going to backfire and I have to mess with the timing alittle to get it started again. I've had to set the timing back several times, probably from messing with it. It acts as if it has jumped time but I don't think that is possible. The next time it may be fine. This is a fresh engine that has not even been on the road yet. Its the original 77 dist. with the all the MSD goodies installed.

Pull the distributor cap and check to see that the advance weights will move freely. If not then I understand your question. They should move very freely. Maybe just a very little 2-4-D will take care of your problem.

Yep. The advance will stick under the rotor and need cleaning /lubing. And check to be sure the cap is square (way easier to miss this then one would think).

I just went through this with my HEI. New MSD cap, coil & rotor. No mechanical advance. Rotor doesn't seem to fit just right & turns out it was binding the advance mechanism. $4 rotor at Advance last night & problem solved. I thought MSD was good stuff. BTW, this is my first post. Lots of good stuff on here. You guys are great!!

Very common problem. Take it apart, clean it up, lube it, and then set it up for 36 degrees of total timing. Car will feel like a new car.
