Default SB Distributor Cap Wire Orientation

Installed the distributor in my 73 - 350, noticed the orientation for the wires in the 73 Chevrolet Shop Manual was different for a Corvette than other SB Chevys. For a Vet the #1 wire goes to the right of the window, for others it goes to the left of the window. What this does for a Vet is point the vacuum advance basically at the right side, instead of forward. Why are Vets different, and does it make a difference how the wires are oriented?

Just a guess, but it probably has to due with fitting the vacuum in between the spark plug wire support and the vacuum fitting on the back of the intake. I just finished assembling all of this stuff on my rebuild and it's an unholy mess on the back of the intake with all of the vacuum lines, etc. back there.

Paul is correct. Up through 67, the Vette uses the standard Chevy distributor installation. On the C3's, the firewall is so close to the distributor that the tach cable will kink if the distributor is installed in the "normal" manner. So Chevy issued the Service Bulletin that Paul shows above to allow the distrubutor to be re-clocked to eliminate cable kink. In order to keep the plug wires the same length, the wires were relocated in the cap so that they are in the same relative position in the engine compartment.

There will be more mis-spelled words when I'm typing at the bar...

You can say what you wish about NCRS but their literature has excellent information.
