The '79 Vette I bought has the optional front/chin spoiler, but does NOT have a rear spoiler. Was it even possible to get one from the factory without the other? In other words, I'm wondering if a previous owner added the one on the front or removed the one on the back. I can't ever remember seeing one without the other on ANY '78 or '79.
An option D80 says front and rear spoiler for 265.00 for a 79. Saw this in the black book but it does not show the option on the link below. but it does say, Bolt-on front and rear spoilers (also from the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car) became available.
The D80 spoiler package was only available in 79. I would think yours was either dealer installed or someone else in the past liked it and put the front spoiler on. Is it a 3 piece spoiler?
Actually, at least in 78 on the Pace Cars, the front spoiler WAS dealer installed. It came shipped IN the car. Probably too hard to transport on the car carriers with it on.
If you come across a tank sticker on your 79, look for the D80 code. But also look for D75, that is the code for the FRONT "air deflector". After D80 is just "rear panel extension".
Look at the link for Rogers Corvette. Search for pics of his 78 Pace Car, still in factory wraps with the front spoiler still not attached.
I would think that the previous owner put the front spoiler on.
The front spoiler is an easy bolt on unit. The rear spoiler is a little more difficult and challenging to get right. That may have dampened the excitement of putting both units on.
I really like the rear spoiler but no so much the front. If I end up with a car with spoilers the front is coming off, but if it doesn't have either im just going to order a rear spoiler, I prefer the 78-79 to the one molded in on the 80-82.
My '79 only has the rear spoiler. It was sold by the first owner like that, but since she hasn't replied to any of my e-mails I wouldn't know why it only has the rear one.
For '79, the factory option offered the spoilers in pairs, front and rear, same as first appeared a year earlier on the '78 Pace Cars. This package was duplicated by the aftermarket providers and made available to anyone who wanted them. Each spoiler could be purchased separately. You could also order them over the counter from a Chevrolet parts department.
My front spoiler is just like the one on Windsoreight's car; it's a 3-piece unit, only Windsor's is in better condition. The car is going to get a paint job and the minor body work it needs once I've got the $$$$; I'm still debating on whether I should leave the spoiler situation as it is, get rid of the front spoiler or add one to the back. It seems that getting rid of the one on the front would give me a bit more ground clearance.
