does anyone know what to use to fill the joints on the winshield frame where they over lap my 75 vert is about ready to go to the paint shop and I want to have the windshield frame totaly done before it goes in and since the windshield is out why not replace the old cracked filler shoot a couple of coats of self etching primer and top coat in black (any suggestions on paint to use will be greatly appreciated )
Use a urethane body seam sealer. As far as paint goes, use a catalyzed finish because if the body shop gets paint on it, it won't lift like a non catalyzed paint will.
I use a 2-part seam sealer by Durammix (now owned by 3M). I've used 3M seam single-part seam sealers for years, like the kind that come in a caulking tube, before switching over to the Duramix. The main stumbling block for me was the $75 gun it takes to use the product. Plus, overall, it's pretty expensive. I made my own gun. Anyway, in my mind, there is no comparison, the 2 part Duramix system is so far superior, I wouldn't use the single stage again. In fact, on another restoration project, a lot of the 3M seam sealer I used cracked and I had to dig it out. That's when I decided buying the cheap stuff was for the birds and went to Duramix. Fortunately I hadn't painted the vehicle yet. I think the Duramix (or equivelent) is the way to go. Cracked seam sealer can lead to rusty seams. There are other companies that make it, but the key is to get 2 part product. Maybe Evercoat sell it too. They're generally lower in price, but have good products.
On another note, I've used cheap latex caulk on low-end projects in non critical areas just because it was there and I didn't have any "seam sealer". It worked suprisingly well. Took a day or two to cure, but it wasn't an issue in my case.
