on my 70 when i make a hard left turn the tie rod end hits the edge of the steel ralley wheel right where the tire is seated on the rim . the tie rods are old but can they be worn enough to do this ? thanks
Tie rods are fixed on the steering arm. The steering arm is rigidly attached to the spindle. Their relationship should not change weather going straight or turning.
Something is wrong if it changes while turning
do you have any ideas where I should start to look for the problem
Watch the tie rod. It is rigid, sure it pivots but otherwise it is rigid. YOu should be able to grab the tie rod sleeve and try moving it up and down and it shouldn't move.
Have someone turn the wheel while you watch the tie rod. See if it flexes at all, it should not. It should pivot yes but not flex.
They are cheap, being outer it is left hand thread.
Replace it if you notice anything funny about it in it's movement.
