I think its on the compressor clutch circuit, thats where I found the diagram in the Repair Manual. When the clutch comes on, it also turns on the soleniod and the solenoid kicks the idle up a bit. I'll take a pic this afternoon for you

Great thanks for the offer of a picture that will help a lot. BTW where can I buy one of these soleniods on line?
Dean, It sounds to me that you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check the carb base gasket and hoses. Good luck!
Mike
Now thats a new twist, never thought of that as the problem. Question with a vacuum leak does it only leak when it is hot in stop and go traffic or at long lights, then in cool weather (under 95) not leak? Actually I am thinking the problem is the AC. I believe that when hot the condenser does not condense and that puts a load on the compressor thus drag on the engine. Many cars here due to the hot stop and go have fans installed in front of the condenser to move more air threw it.The problem with doing this to the C3 the hood won't be able to open very much.
No one on the forum has suggested this so I was hoping not to have to add these extra fans. The engine does not get hot ever so it is a shame to have to add these fugle fans just to idle in stop and go city traffic in hot months.
you can put in an electric fan to replace the mechanical one and have it set up to run with normal heat control and off the compressor circuit. I like the electric fan system partially because it cleans up the engine bay so well.

Actually the 81 comes with an electric and clutch fan. The electric fan mounts behind the rad in front of the clutch fan. I guess that is why it never runs hot. Now with that said how did these cars run AC in 81???
I think you already know the answer...with A/C off, you have no problems at lights, hot....I'd follow the solinoid theory...A/C on WILL drag the engine down....maybe you just need the A/C system serviced...ever think of that? You did say it wasn't as cold as it used to be...coincidence?? I think not...

Actually it is nice and cold Except when at long lights, so the AC and low hot idel are conected.
My A/C on the vette doesn't work..."someday"...I will have it looked at, but on my 2000 Mustang, when the A/C compressor kicks in the idle drops for a couple seconds, then the computer notices and compensates, so I know it will effect idle....I'm just saying if the A/C system needs service, it "may" be dragging the RPM's down, altho you say it's nice and cold, which would tell me it's probably fine...this solenoid the guys are talking of is probably the key here...it's just an old way of doing what my Mustang computer does, compensating for the drag of the compressor...ya know?
And if the intake and carb have been changed, it's likely the solenoid went bye-bye...

Yup long gone but I really cant remember it ever being their. When I do a search for "Throttle holding solenoid" I don't see where it is for an 81 only to like 74
I was looking around for you too, and didn't see anything either....I guess best bet would ask for a member with a stock 81 to look and see if one is on the engine, maybe even a picture would be nice..if there should be one on your engine, you should be able to find one someplace in the vette world...if you know what the official name of it is..
Sixfooter had sent me a picture that believe is from his 81. If it is I will get busy in finding my old linkage over at my friend place as he don't throw anything away.
