Default Already thinking more HP

I have not even driven this new motor yet and already thinking how I can get more HP from it. The AFR 190 heads are pretty good performers but I'm sure some here have had them ported and worked over. Do you feel it is worth it. I'll probably be happy with the performance of this motor but you can always be after more. I know a roller cam would help also but I had to draw the $$$ line somewhere. This is all for the future but you can always plan ahead. Motor specs are in my signature.

Looks like your setup is well matched. The money it would cost to port and polish the heads would be better spent on the roller cam in my opinion. The AFR heads are the best for flow out of the box. You won't get much more out of them but the roller setup will probably give you 30 or 40 HP. My setup is similar to yours. Forged 10 :1 383, 288 retro roller cam, AFR 190 heads. Hookers W/ sidepipe with big block inserts. OffenhauserTripower W/ 150 NOS Shot.

The port work won't make much difference if you don't have a big enough cam, compression ratio or sheer cubic inches in the motor. I am running 195 cc intake runners with 2.05 intake valves on a 383, 10.25 CR with a .560 lift roller cam in the motor. The intake runners are just about perfect size for this combo. If the intake runners are to big you will lose your low end tourque in the motor. If it is going to be a street motor the more tourque the better IMO. Was going to use a set of Motown heads 220 cc intakes with a 2.08 intake valve. I would have lost huge amounts tourque in the low end with these heads. I would have to wait to get into high rpm range to find the 220 intake runners beneficial. Looks like I will have to build a 434 CI SB for these Motown heads since I have them hanging around anyway , houstonvett

Ok. I kind of thought the porting would not help as much but I thought I'd ask. I'll drive this combo and get it tuned in before doing anything.
