I thought once the heater core went, it would leak inside the vehicle near the passenger feet. I can see mine leaking under the hood, on the fire wall. Is this defective core or just the putty that holds the cover? I have the motor apart right now, so this might be the best time to fix this.

Most of the time they leak from where the inlet / outlet tubes mate to the core itself. from here it can drip and go whever the fuild will travel
The coolant can find its way just about anywhere but normally the sealant on the blower fan housing prevents a firewall exit and keeps it moving toward the inside of the car.
I have been EXTREMELY lucky, in that both of the cores that went bad for me ('77 & '72 A/C cars) leaked primarily to the outside.
Fluid will find it's way where ever the path of least resistance exists....

Mice can find their way into almost anything, I MEAN ANYTHING!! REALLY. The best weapon of choice is the "boxed" Decon (the little green pellets that are in a box shaped like a slice of cheese). This works fabulous, although their is a chance the dead mouse might be found in your blower again (takes a little while for decon to kill that pesky rodent). Mouse traps in your case would work better initially (USE VERY SHARP CHEDDAR CHEESE), then go to the boxed decon for future protection. I have two cats and they work wonders if you can keep them outside like I can (live on 3 acres). Cats are better than any trap as long as they are OUTDOOR cats only. Indoor ones are TOOO domesticated and lazy. Good luck!!
Amir, I used 3M window weld to bond the heater box back to the firewall. I heard of people using Butyl tape but I think the under hood temps and heat from the heater core wouldnt be good for it.
