Default MSD ignition?

I'm wondering if my BB needs a hotter ignition system than the 1973 factory dist. and coil. I am looking at the MSD-8572 tach drive dist. with a 6-AL box and a blaster SS coil. My engine is a 454 hyd.roller, Edelbrock RPM heads and intake, Holley 750 carb. TRW forged pistons with 10.5:1 CR. (500 HP and 600 torque on a desktop dyno) Should I spend the $$ or not??

If your stock ignition is working fine, there's no reason to change over to the MSD. Just keep on top of the points adjustment.

The MSD setup was the best performance mod I put on mine. Seemed like a different car after the change. The stock distributor was a nice rebuilt unit with new points, cap, rotor, wires plugs. All was right and the MSD was FAR superior.

I am runing the same setup, MSD 8572 w/vac advance, MSD 6A and Mallory Coil and it out performs the factory igmition system on my 435HP roadster.

If you are running a radical cam, you will have to change the MSD Vacuum can that comes with the 8572 to an NAPA VC1810 Can which will be connected to the full manifold vacuum source. The can that comes with the MSD 8572 open opens at 15 " of vacuum, which if you dont have the vacuum reading at idle the MSD can will not do anything for you. I had to do this cause my vacuum at idle is only 8".

You will notice that with this setup the car will start much faster and run far better than the stock ignition.

Default I u don't need that mech tach dist i can use it.

Don't throw out that mech tach dist - I'll buy it from you.

Yea, i got the MSD package - dist #8572, 6AL, Baster 2 and works great on the mild performance street engines. But the newer digital units from Crane (with rpm limit by dial) and MSD are a step up from my older analog box. Stay with the 6 series gear for the street - don't use 7 series on the street unless u really know what your doing (and since you r the one asking i don't imagine u do).

IMHO all u really need for a street mtr is an HEI unit with performance modual and good performance coil - well decent plug wires too (8mm sprial core silcone).

A few small details to wiring the MSD 6AL so if u do install let us know or PM me if help needed.

MSD all the way. When I installed my ZZ4 I went with the tach drive MSD unit, 6AL box, Blaster 2 coil and 8mm MSD superconductor wires. Good modification + you get a rev limiter to boot.

I like the 6AL if for nothing else then the rev limiter. My msd is about 15 years old and Never causes a problem. I never foul a plug with it and with the rev limiter I have that added security if it gets away it will protect itself.
