For the longest time I thought it was my imagination or just a poor tune up or bad carb or whatever. Seems like when I close my hood my idle drops 200 or so rpms, maybe less. If your not paying attention you might think its quieter because the hood is closed and you cant hear the engine noise anymore. Made for a real PIA tryin to set an idle speed. I finally confirmed it this weekend by getting a friend to close the hood while I sat in the car. We looked for any lines, vac hoses, wires etc being crimped when the hood shuts but didnt see any. Is this possile? Anyone ever had this happen to them before? I was wondering if it had something to do with my air cleaner. I'm not using one of those drop base ones, just a plain old small round one. ANy ideas? Another brain teaser I know. Just wait till the hot weather gets here and I start with the running hot on the hi-way thread again lol.

thats really small......i bet you have a restriced air flow situation.....try a larger one and see how it works for you....i have one you can try if you want next time your down this way.....i have the base and top but no filter for it. it will go on the hot rod engine some time in the future

I'll buy that answer but why does it make a difference if the hood is up or not?

Is the air cleaner hitting the hood when you close it? Do you have the insulation installed under the hood (is it getting sucked into the air filter element)? Is the choke likage hitting the the underside of the air cleaner base?
Before my engine swap, I had the L-82 with a real crappy air filter set up... and I sort of noticed the same problem... had to cut out the insulation around the air cleaner so it could breathe better (the stuff was sagging down all around it)... made a huge difference.
Cory,
The quickest check for the air filter is just to remove it. Close the hood and see if you have the same problem or not. If you do, I'd look elsewhere.
I think your coil wire is too long.....

I'm going to put something on top of the air cleaner and then close the hood ans see if contact is made. The under hood insulation is not sagging and I dont believe the choke linkage is hitting.

Should have thought of that , taking off air filter, duhhhh. Why do you say coil wire????

Think when you close your hood, less air is getting to your small air cleaner as most air then would be drawn from front of engine...assuming you have stock hood...

Stock hood, should have kept my original 14 inch drop base air cleaner but it rubbed slightly on the distributor.

Started vette tonite after work, let it warm up and removed air cleaner. Idle stays the same when I drop the hood. Put air cleaner back on, closed hood and lost 150 rpms. No marks on the hood insulation and the insulation is relatively new and not sagging. Guess I'm ordering a new drop base 14 inch air cleaner from Summit.

you may need to get the small plastic spacers so that it fits around the choke horn.....i don't know how to describe this but can show you a picture if you don't know what i'm talking about
