Default Vacuum advance removal problem

I want to put a new vac advance canister in, simply, I don't believe it is working, no timing change with vacuum hose on or hose off plugged.
The screws holding the canister in the distributor will NOT come out with a screwdriver...I've put penetrating oil on, nothin'....I don't know if Bubba put Loc-Tite on these 2 screws, but so far they have been a beatch to get loose....
I am comtemplating a small vise-grip and turning...but I can see myself twisting that damned head right of the threads...then, talk about being screwed...
Anyone have any ideas??

Pulling the distributor out of the engine is not that difficult to do. This may be the way to go if you cannot get the screws out.

Taking a pair of vise grips to use would be a good start. But a backup plan would be needed in case the heads of the bolts break off, leaving the threads embedded in the plate.

In that case you will need to take the distributor out to get to the screws, and use an easy out, or a drill, to drill out the remaining screw area.

Take a pin punch and a hammer. Smack the tops of the screws several times to jar them a little. This will usually allow you to get them broken loose if the screw slots aren't already damaged.

If the screws are screwed up, you can drill the heads off the screws. Once the heads are off and the tension is released, you can remove the vacuum advance control unit and simply unscrew the remaining portion of the screw with your fingers or pliers - they will come right out. Then just install new hardware.

For your HEI, use vacuum advance NAPA part number VC1838 for a near-stock or mildy modifed car.

No, the slots are fine....the screws just don't turn and I know better then to go too far and bugger the slot...ok, either way, if the heads come off, I should be able to get the threads out..didn't realize the threads will stick up a little once the unit is off..duhhhh, sorry about that...:o
Thanks, guys
