Default Carb woes...

So me and my dad pulled our 75 outa the back yard yesterday. Its from a pretty rough time of his life, so working on it has been a sore topic for awhile. Well it hasnt really been on the road in over 10 years...And everything in the car is at least that old (ie plugs oil ect ect). The gas itself is about 2 years old and from the last time we brought it out.

Anyway.....
Its a 75 4spd l48... Totally stock minus color. It was originally red and is now black, but it needs new paint, and may go back to the original.

Ive spent the last 12 or so hours online looking at stuff...including the last 11 pages of this forum, as well as trying a search, but I cant find the answer to the question.

As were driving around, it pulls alright, pretty torquey, but as the RPMS get up there it started makin a noise and I asked him about it, he said it was the watcha macalits on the carb openin up, and Im like the secondaries? and hes like yea.
Well when this happens, it lays flat on its face, and really wont accelerate at all (like putting a 5spd in 5th and flooring it at like 35 or 40 MPH). Dad says its the carb flooding out the motor, and I would agree, but at the same time, it used to run ausome, and the carb hasnt been adjusted, so if anything I would say it was leaning out.

Sorry for the legnthy post, but I cant help it
If anyone has an idea on whats going on just let me know hehe.
(btw just picked up some new plugs, wires, another air filter and some oil and a filter for that as well maybe it will go away after I swap all that out)

Dump the gas, put in all the tune up parts, make sure the timing is set up correctly, give it a try.

It's an L48. That's how it's supposed to feel.

Fuel filter, replace it! And you damn well better not be driving that thing with the 10 year old oil. The bowl could be leaking, after sitting that long I would say that the carb definitely needs a rebuild. And new plugs!

with the above. Get rid of the ole gas by siphoning it out. Put in a fresh tank of 93 and 2 cans of carb cleaner into the tank. Besides getting rid of some of the tarnish in the carb, it is going to knock some crud loose in your tank and lines, so be prepared to have to change fuel filters. Repeat this a couple of tanks and then let us know how's it going.

Thanks for the tips guys, and after reading the response I realize how much like a dumb nooby I sound.... bah... I originally would have said bad gas, because I am a **** about things like that (and no... I am not driving it anywhere, its my dad) but the fact that it started up so flawlessly really made me think it was something else...

Were can a guy find a copy of this carb tuning paper by Lars ? I have been looking at the Edelbrock, Holley and Demon carbs but it seems the carb of choice on the forum being the good ol' quadrajet. I have an original quadrajet in good condition that maybe could be improved upon ... Thanx

I had a similiar symptom with mine after it got back from it's R&D work with Holley. As with your situation the gas went bad while it was down there and even after I put fresh gas in it the secondaries weren't feeding the engine any fuel. I could feel the linkage opening up the secondaries but it would just lay down and barely accelerate. My guess is some of the old gas gummed up and blocked a fuel passage becouse it eventually cleared up and ran great again. I guess the detergents in the fresh gas eventually broke up the deposite.

don't adjust anything yet......change all the fluids, spark plugs and get a feel for whats going on first.....and if your use carb cleaner it will run like crap until it gets burned out of the tank.....i say drive it and after your second tank of gas think about adjusting stuff

Probably what I will end up doing....
OMG WHO THE HELL ROUTED THE SPARK PLUG WIRES FROM THE FACTORY...
I took all the sheilding off to replace the wires... ended up dropping the starter on the passenger side to get everything back the way it was... including routing the wire between the motor mount and the block itself...
Im like... Im sure 90% of people re routed their wires after the first wire change, and my dads like... dont cut any corners, and you might get to drive that car back to birmingham (for college). Well, I routed them the way they were, and I seriously think the wires I pulled off were the factory wires that were on it in the first place, they were that old. Car started right up, runs good, oil/air filter/fuel filter change is tomorow, then I will run around a bit, if the secondaries dont open, it may keep me off it long enough to learn how my new car drives right?
