Default Changing PS hoses

I have a leak in the Power Steering Cylinder Hoses (Extend & Retract) and I'm replacing them.

I've already got them and was wondering are there any particular procedures to do or can I just take the bad hoses off and replace them.

Is it that simple? I'm sure fluid will come out, but is it pressurized or what.

I'm tired of paying mechanics!

Changing the hoses is relatively easy. Just remove the old ones and add the new ones. Afterwards add enough new fluid to bring the pump up to the full mark, start the engine, rotate the steering wheel from lock to lock a couple of times to get out any air, and then recheck your fluid level.

You can save yourself some grief by turning your steering wheel full lock to full lock a few times BEFORE starting your engine. With the wheels off the ground, this is quite easy. Refill the reservoir as large bubbles make their way out of the fluid.

If you start your engine before getting most of the air out, the air and oil will get whipped together as they pass through the pump and you will have milky colored fluid and possible erratic power assist for the next day or so.

I also recommend that you fill your system with genuine GM power steering fluid. It is available through GM dealers and is the only fluid that is specifically formulated to work with the Saginaw power steering pumps.

Jim

PS Don't forget how your original hoses are routed. You want hte new ones attached exactly the same way. They actually criss-cross as they connect to the valve. If you hook them up backwards, you will really get a surprise!!!!

Pay attention to how they come off the piston. The hoses actually cross on that side. The temptation (if not paying attention) is not to cross them!
