Test dash gauges?

Test dash gauges?
Is there anyway to test the gauges in the center dash? The fuel gauge and oil pressure gauge on the car I recently bought aren't registering. The fuel gauge is just off, it would seem, and the oil pressure doesn't seem to be working. Before I get the car registered and start to drive it can I test these gauges? Should I just buy replacements or could it be something that's easily fixed?
Keep in mind the car was rarely driven before I purchased it a few weeks ago.

In my 78, the oil pressure gauge is electric, maybe the wire to the pressure sensor is off or broken. On my 78, it was on the side of the engine by the filter, sometimes it is on top of the engine at the back beside the distributor.
Maybe the fuel gauge linkage in the tank is gummed up?

turn the ignition on and get a test light.ground out the clip on the light and touch the wire in question to the tip.if it doesn't light up the test light,it isn't the gauges.follow the wire back until you find wherever the break is.if the light works but the unit doesn't,check for ground.hook the clip of the light onto power and test the light on the ground wires.if it doesn't light, it's the ground.
