Default Engine Removal

I am pulling the engine on my 71 small block, 4-speed for the third time. I have always removed the transmission first. Is it feasible to support the trans and leave it in the car? Seemingly coming out would not be a problem, it's going back in that concerns me. The car is on a four poster lift so I would not have easy underneath access for aligning the trans to engine.

It,s harder to pull the radiator and shroud and maybe the radiator support for room to get the shaft out ot the trans.than pulling the trans.

Pull both the motor and the trans as one unit. Separate the two out of the car.

This is by far the easiest way to do things. There is nothing worse than trying to line up the throw out bearing, clutch, pilot bearing and transmission shaft with the trans tunnel in the way.

I've already got the shroud and radiator out. I don't mind removing those nearly as much as removing the trans linkage. And of course removing the linkage is much easier then reinstalling.

just had my engine rebuilt, and although the engine came out alone, it went back in with the transmission attached, without difficulties. We had removed the shroud, but left the radiator in place. The block was complete except for the fan and pulleys. Even with the exhaust manifolds attached, we had plenty of room to work and with patience, she dropped right into place. Also, the car was on a lift, and we had all of the tires off, so geting the engine lift in tight was no problem.

It can be done!

Alot easier going back in together, but with the body off is the easiest
