Default No Kick down on tromp...where to start?

Folks,

Starting to address engine/performance issues.

1979 L82, TH350 Auto, looks to be original Q-Jet installed on an aftermarket Edelbrock manifold. Vacuum hoses seem to be correct and are all intact. It idles strong and steady. When I start out in third it shifts nicely through from 1st down to 3rd. If I stomp on it, it just stays in third and slowly picks up speed. Where do I begin? I'm pretty naive about all the engine dynamics but I expect it's a carburation issue (secondaries?).

Any thoughts appreciated,
Steve

Adjust your kickdown cable.

Kickdown cable is attached to the carb. Throttle linkage on top and kickdown underneath if memory serves me correct. There is an adjustment capability. Might even be disconnected. I think there is also a vac line on the rear of the manifold behind the carb that goes to the tranny and might have some effect if not connected.

If the vac line was disconnected, it wouldn't shift correctly at all. Sounds like it's just the kickdown is loose or disconnected.
If the kickdown cable is loose (out of adjustment) ,then:
Depress the throttle all the way, and pull the kickdown cable till you take out all the slack (you won't have to pull it very hard), then readjust the stop on the kickdown cable. If it's disconnected, you'll just need to figure out how to re-connect it.

On the cable where it attaches at the bracket , there is a piece that will release the cable. It is a black plastic piece that you can either push up with your finger or pry it up with a screwdriver. When you release the cable, it will be tighter. Then have someone depress the gas pedal to the floor, and push that piece back down to lock the cable. Some people try doing it by themselves by opening the throttle at the carb. The problem with this proceedure is that often the carb can actually open further than what the pedal will open it. This results in a loose cable and the kick down does not work properly.
Although, ideally it should only have to be done when the cable is replaced, this is not an ideal world. The cables do stretch and it may have been adjusted over the years.
Good Luck

Thanks to all, once again.

Vac line to the tranny has been addressed so I'll work with the cable. I'll let y'all know...
