I have an '81 w/ the stock 350, rochester carb. Some times it just will not start, other times its starts right up. The times that it won't start I can smell gas, so I try the pressing the pedal to the floor to clear it, but that doesn't work. What could be the problem?
oh, boy, does this sound like the problem i had years ago.
when i had it, the hard start was so bad, i would kill the battery trying to get it to start. sound familiar?
if so, here's the deal. on the firewall, mounted just inside of the brake booster is a stamped steel bracket. mounted to that bracket is the MAP sensor. if you can find a replacement, just replace it. in the mean time, make sure the vacuum tube is in good condition, clean and put some dielectric grease on the electrical plug.
let me know if this fixes it.
If your MAP is dead, I might have one that's still good. I'll probably never get rid of my '81, unless it's mangled in a wreck, so no point to keeping all of these stock parts any more.
