i am pretty sure there is a thread for this but i could not find it. i need to know where to look for matching numbers. exactly where to look. i have a 1976 vette. Thanks'
There's a VIN on the 4-speed, but don't know about the auto. Matching numbers could extend to casting numbers and date codes on heads and exhaust manifolds plus date stampings on alternator, master cylinder, starter, carb, etc. Depends how crazy you are...
ok, i got a pic from barrette jackson. engine: 16s4435 v0714cky and body: 1z37j6s443505
so i guess matching is there a way i can look up the history on this car?
The VIN is under the compressor/under the right front valve
cover. Use a light because it probably is covered in dirt or painted
over. If it's painted over clean until you can see it.
Example of a VIN -
1 means Chevy Z means corvette model 37 means coup L means
base or standard engine 6 means "76 model year S means St Louis
4 is a place holder and the last 5 digits indicate it was the
18278 vette built that year. (This is an example from Corvette
Fever).

How did Barrett-Jackson get involved?
16S4435 is an incomplete number. Take another look. It should be 16S43505 to match the VIN.
VIN is incorrect No J code for 76; fifth character should be L or X.
Engine suffix of CKY is incorrect for a 76 Corvette but is correct for '72.
V0714 indicates the engine was assembled at the Flint, Michigan engine plant (V) on July 14, probably 1972. All Corvette smallblocks were assembled at Flint.
I'm guessing, but I'd say your engine is original and you're reading the numbers incorrectly.

The second number - 1z37J6S443505
1= Chevy Z= Chevy Model 37= Coupe
J = basic engine 6 = 1976 model s=St Louis
4 = placeholder 43505 = serial of this engine - yours
is the 43505 made at that time.
It appears the body is Corvette but your engine is not. 1 is corvette,
and Z is Corvette model. The "VO" on engine pad should be there
but, the VIN on Window post and engine block should be exactly
the same. In other words the Iz37 .... etc should be on your block
also.

on the engine there are two numbers:
16s443505 then to the right in larger letter are v0714ckx
on the body i cleaned it off better and it is:
|737L6S443505
Getting better: 16S443505 decodes as Corvette (1) '76 (6: GM expects you to know the decade) S (plant code for St. Louis) 443505 should be the consecutive unit number for your Corvette.
V0714CKx decodes Flint Engine Assembly Plant (V and correct for a Corvette smallblock) 0714 (calendar date July 14th; date the engine was assembled); CKx could be CKW if your car has a 4 speed or CKX is it's auto. So far, so good. The engine appears to be original.
