looks almost like the tranny vacuum control hardline if you have an auto trans but mine comes up the the passenger side of the motor on my '78. IF that's what it is it would connect to a port in the intake manifold behind the carb in front of the distributor
well i was trying to get the arrow pointing to the electrical connector. The wires on the engine compartment side start at the bulkhead connector and are hanging down. The wires are maybe 10-12 inches long. Whatever it was, it must have been mounted close by.
The tubing with the yellow tape on the end goes to the evaporative cannister. I think the tube you refer to is also on the passenger side on the 74 as well. The black cable hanging down is speedo.
here's a photo taken earlier before i touched this connector; it hung like that for a long time. now that i'm working on the wiring, i'd like to get it right. thanks. . .
you can't see in the photo, but there are two wires that connect to the alarm switch mounted on the driver fender. This connector doesn't go there, but i think that it may have been part of the alarm system somehow. thanks. . .

That conector looks like the one that fits the switch on the headlights and one was used on the alarm also. If the lock and switch was tampered with the alarm went off. The socket should have the plugs like this - l I think if this is the plug.

I'm glad you clarified that. I was going to say it connected to the front wheels to steer the car with.
Sorry, no I have no clue what the electric connector goes to.

Lyle, you are correct, that plug does have a connector shape like you describe: " - l "
do you know what it connects to? my car must be missing something? the alarm cylinder lock has two wires with ring terminal connections; those wires are still okay. . .

Just checked under my hood....the only thing that looks the same is the one I have hooked up to my fender alarm. There are 2 single wires and then that connector. Other than that I have nothing else down there that looks like that.
Interesting posts. I have a complete 74 forward harness (74 SBC auto) laying on my back porch. I just examined it an found only one connector on that part of the harness. It is a single wire connector (brown wire). According to the Corvette Black book, all 74's should have been alarm equipped - it isn't listed as an option.
