i have a 69 427 auto and would like to tighten front steering so ithe steering wheel doesnt feel so loose. ihave already replaced all the old rubber parts with new rubber. it seems to me that you can adjust the tightness of the steering box. i am not looking to redo the whole front end like steeroids just a reasonable way to get some of the play out of the steering. i have also put in new koni shocks. thanks
If either or both are bad, they are two of the least expensive and easiest ways to tighten up a loose steering. Because of the ease and expense, they are always the first two things I check.
My 1970 had had all the steering joints replaced when I bought it. The steering was terrible. You could move the wheel at least 2 inches either way and the car wold not move on the road. I took it to my local garage and they simply tightened up the adjuster in the steering box. Now it is spot on. They did say that you can over do it so be carefull.
get the jeep box conversion, you will otherwise never get all the slop out because of the steering control valve. The valve stud moves a little sideways when switching and this slop will always be there. Tightening the box adjuster will lead to premature wear and could even lead to the worm and sector binding with disastrous results.
The correct way is to remove the gear from the car and adjust the gear on a bench with an inch-lb torque wrench.
It is possible to make a fairly close adjustment with the gear in the car. The engineers at Saginaw used the following procedure on the manual gears in their cars.
whats the big deal with tightening the lash? you just put the monkey wrench on the thingy with the flat sides and loosen it up alot then put your flat headed tool in the grove of the framis and tighten it up real good. i know this because i read it in 'THE CORVETTE EXPERT' BY BUBBA. seriously iwill start with rag joint and pitman arm before i do anything else. thanks for the help.
