Default Horizontal scrolling

What is up with with all these super wide threads ? It seems there are more of these everyday. I have been trying to avoid them, but they are becoming more prevalent latley. There are enough things to avoid on a computer forum then to be bothered by a bunch of side wise scrolling.

I either pass them up or try to guess what they say, it's getting more difficult because they are getting wider all the time.

I cut out the pictures because they were taking up most of the room, now the super wide threads are here. Is this the forum server itself? or the posters doing it? I would like to know so I don't become a part of doing this.
I am thankfull for the stop feature to stop all the overused animation, but I cannot shrink the threads, or can I ? if any one knows please tell me, I'm missing a out on a lot of good stuff this way.

A lot of changes here, I'm trying to adjust, but it's not fun anymore......

Running IE with a screen resolution of 800 x 600, the only posts I've seen requiring horizontal scrolling are the result of too wide a picture or to wide a signature.

Are you running 640 x 480? That would likely result in more posts requiring horizontal scrolling.

Go to your user options (on the forum) and try a different font. I use the smallest font there is which does away with all scrolling.
The best thing about this new forum is the ability to turn off pictures which helps a lot! Too many people around here don't know how to resize pictures for their signatures...either that or they feel their car is so special it deserves to fill the entire screen and then some?

Turn off pics and select a smaller font and you should be good to go.

Turning off the pics may not solve the problem. Many times the page requires horizontal scrolling because someone posted a huge link, and your browser can't break it up. If you turn off the pics the forum software will automatically replace the pics by links, and many times it will replace small pics by huge links!

One thing that helps is to turn off the signatures, because that simply eliminates the signatures, rather than replacing pics by links.

COOL! Just reset my options
I had no idea I could just disable signatures while keeping pictures.

Thanks for the tip!

Norman, I use a 19" monitor set at 800x600 and use IE v5.01 for a browser. You will need to adjust your resolution and or font sizes for smaller screens. The trend these days for most websites is 800x600.

As far as animations, I am guilty as sin for using those. I kinda like them and I also like seeing the pics in the signatures and leave all these features enabled. I use a cable modem that is extremely fast. I can load anything I've ever found on the internet in less than 3 seconds regardless of pics and whatnot. Because of this I've gotten spoiled and sometimes forget that many others use dial-ups with lousy ISPs and thus are much slower to load pages, sometimes painfully so.

My extreme apologies to ya'll that are using the dial-ups and I for one will try to be more considerate and will use the animations sparingly. Sorry!!

As mentioned above much of the time the screen will expand to fit pics that are posted above the standard resolution resulting in your scrolling problem. Resizing pics to 640x480 or 340x220 will cure this but you need some type of photoprocessor to keep the picture clean. I use ThumbsPlus and Photo Shop for mine.

I notice that my own topic ran over wide, and I have no pictures.
What did I do to create a wide "letter". My signiture is short
so it should't be the problem, any ideas ? Perhaps this happens when I use
the entire line width when typing? How about the moderators any
answers?

This only shows up on some threads and posts not all. Hmmm'
curious bit isn't it?

Thanks for your replies;...............Norm'

It may not be your posts running wide. The screen size that you see adjusts to the largest posted item in the thread in order to show the picture in the resolution that it was posted in. This in turn will make all of the posts in that thread appear too wide. The "auto wrap" feature in the box you type a post or reply in appears to work fine and "wraps" text according to the resolution the webmasters have set. So you don't have to worry about hitting "enter" and the end of each "visible" line.

I'm sure the moderators can help much more in answering the "whys?".

I got it !!! I got rid of the pictures and the signitures, now I recieve everything within the normal parameters with out scolling horizontally. It sure is a relief, that was a real pain in the......... I even went back to medium size fonts without adverse actions. The signitures had more of an effect than the pictures. I have DSL and it is a really fast set up without all the trimmings.

Thanks for all of your ideas and replys,

Norm'
