A co-worker just told me a small trick for oil changes, maybe some of you do this already...?
He noted that when you change your oil and filter you should fill the filter 3/4 full with oil prior to installation, along with lubricating the seal which I have always done. Being in a family entirely automotive based with GM I had never heard this as a step. He noted that by doing this you may prevent dry cycling of the engine between the time it takes to pump up the oil pressure to get the oil into and out of the new oil filter.
Just found this as interesting/useful information...
Anyone else do this? Could be an extra step to baby that fine-tuned Corvette motor!
Yep. I've always filled the filter befor einstalling. I thought everyone did that? If you don't you'd run the engine with no oil pressure for several seconds.
been doing it that way since pop taught me back in the 70s
and another trick is a simple disk magnet on the bottom of the filter
to trap and metal particles and keep them in the filter.

They sell magnetic oil drain plugs for the same reason to pull out and trap the metal particles.
There have been past threads on this issue and it came down to a matter of personal preference. Your engine maintains enough lubricant that it is not going to get damaged. I do fill mine on the vette because it means less topping up at the other end, ( and fact or not I feel I get a better filter seal). Like PRNDL stated, there is no way I would try that on my daily drivers that have the filters on sideways.
One tip I learned when removing an old oil filter from the car when changing the oil; use a plastic grocery bag to put around the oil filter when you are just about done unscrewing it from the engine. This will prevent oil from spilling down your arm or on the floor. You can then encapsulate it in the plastic bag. Very neat and usually not too messy.
I go one step further when I change my oil and filter besides prefilling the filter I disconnect the ignition sourse from the distributor and motor the engine until I get oil pressure indicated on my gauge. I am sure you all Probably thnk its dumb but Knock on wood I have never had and engine failure.

the only reason I dont go to jiffy lube or other places.... i fear them not filling the filter.
You may have to wait a few seconds when the oil gets to the top as it absorbs into the filter element. Just simply top it off a few times then she's full.

I fear the Monkeys under the rack. I had some new tires put on my truck about a month ago. I think I could have done a better job at it than those tire jockeys. Same reason I try to do all of my own work.
