Default 75 Vette tach reading incorrect

Hello,
Don`t see to many of these so I`m trying to shave a little time off diagnosing. I have a 75 vette with the tach reading approx 5,000 rpm at idle, slight acceleration sends the tach needle in reverse to approx 3000 to 3500. It appears that this had happened on a hard acceleration which may or may not have had anything to do with it. The tach filter has been changed and all connections checked. With the tach wire disconnected there is no tach, so, a signal is being sent. Any help with his situation would be greatly appricated. I`m thinking it may be the tach itself but I would like to make an accuate diag.
thanks
Dan

When you turn off the motor, and then turn on the ignition without cranking the car over, does the tach go to 0?

It idles at 4800 rpm shut of it goes up 400 rpm to 5200 if you key it back up it will go to 6000 then it don`t matter how many times you key it up it stays there.
