What is the best way to jackup rear end in a home garage?? I need to turn rear wheels to see where a noise is comming from and wanted to see whats the best way. Do I put jack on either side and lift it up or somewhere else? I noticed a noise coming from rear end that sounds like its rubbing somewhwre brake or something else dont know yet. Any help would be appriciated.

Re: Jacking rear end up??? (Tx73Vette)
I always jack the rear right under the differential and rear spring. I put a piece of 2x4 atop the floor jack to prevent direct metal-metal contact with the rear end. Then I put 3-ton jack stand under the frame right in front of the reat wheels.
Regardless of the jacking method you choose to adopt, the rear suspension will drop down considerably as the car is raised. You want to ensure you will be able to raise the rear high enough for the clearance you will need. Personally, I find attempting to jack beneath the differential to be too long a reach for me. I jack at the frame in front of the #3 body mount on each side and place my jack stands there. It works for me.
I jack under the differential but when you jack up the rear wheels fall. While turning the wheels over by hand the universal bind at one point making it difficult to smoothly turn the rear end over and over. If I am doing this I remove the springs from the long bolts and raise the tires so the driveshafts are level . It turns over alot smoother and easier.

Norval,
Never thought of that. While adjusting my parking brake I thought I had a problem in the rear end because of the turning effort needed to line up the adjusment hole in the rotor. After close inspection of the half-shafts and such I concluded that the u-joints were causing my binding problem. Next time I will do what you do....THANKS
