Still not sure what to pursue... Any more thoughts?
Perhaps this should've been asked first: What's the bottom dollar for the 400 block you can get? And what all comes with it? And what'll it cost ya to get it to you?
What Do You Want? Biger The Cube Biger The Hp And Torque Also More $$$$ The 434 Will Cost You About 3grand Extra Over A 406 Crank Cost More Custom Pistons A Must Unless Plan To Run The $good $good Stuff
I Like Mine And Would Not Consider A 406 Now If Had The Buck Might Want To Go With An Alum Aftermarket Block.
I Have Been Looking For Another 400 These Motors Are Gettn Hard To Find Now
I can get the block w/cap & no crank for $200 and I'll have to pick it up locally. It's also a standard bore and I'll still have to invest more to get the thing ready for a build.

2bolt 400 or 4bolt 400 ... if it's a GOOD block it's gonna be worth $200 to most folks. Before you sink $ in it ... pressure wash it & check it VERY close for cracks decks & bulkheads ... then have it professionally baked & cleaned ... then have the shop check it for cracks. It's a good thing that it seems it's an empty block ... that's about all you'd want anyway ... and you can properly check it only when empty. Just because it's standard does not ensure +0.030" overbore will clean it up ... probably will but no guarantee. Just because it has caps does not ensure they're the correct caps in correct position ... it's probably OK ... but may need line honing.

Don't let anyone tell you that you need forged stuff for running on the street, the above rotating assembly is good for 550-600HP
dunno 'bout the numbers but that stuff'll be fine for strong street motor. If it's a good block for $200 ... get started. If you start with a decent block, a real nice street 406 short block should be doable for around $1300-$1400 total including $200 block ... you assemble.
