Jim had told me about a good article recently on the 509's. I don't recall which mag...maybe he can chime in.
Im looking at a 4.470x4 with a streetable solid roller soon to replace my boring 454 hyd roller, so any combos would be appreciated. aiming for 650-700 BHP
On a buget (need a tremec first) so will reuse GM crank and buy a Gen VI 502 block, H beam rods and 10.2 srp pistons. Have 320 ProToplines, 2" Doug Thorey headers and 3" exhaust. As the car will only ever run street tyres and original rear I figure I dont need any more cubes.
Tell ya what, Jim. Ride on up here in that monster of yours, take me and each of my kids for a ride and I'll split freight shipping back to you. I'll try to twist the arms of my buddies at SDPC - who knows, we may be able to get one drop shipped directly to you.
I'd ship it Ryder, but you know their prices are as high as giraffe nookie!
simmo, you might want to check prices of the 502 block against others like the Sportsman Bowtie. SDPC shows the 502 at $1629 and most don't recommend boring them past 4.530. The Sportsman Bowties can go to 4.600, maybe more. I've seen several at that bore with no problems.
Have truck, will travel. Thanks to Rob M. I now have a nice car-hauler.
We can haul 427Hotrod in race-mode so he can give Disneyland rides to the kids...big and small. i could also bring Vetmaniac his carb. Let me know.
Patrick, Jim,
When is the roadtrip?
Dixon, that block has the correct "color" to indicate very high nickel content, which happens to be a very good thing for reducing wear on the engine and a very bad thing for inducing wear on your machinist's tools. Machine shops that have never experienced an Aftermarket Merlin, Dart, etc Iron block tend to get a little pissed off the first time they deal with them. The machines have to run slower.
That GM block is one very sexy looking piece. I liked the casting quality of my Dart over my Merlin II, but I think I like this new GM one even better. The price looks hard to beat for what you are getting. Time to break that piggy bank.
Y'all come on up. We're flat and dry but at least we have a Hooters. Not bad for the second most conservative city in the nation. We have a local strip and I know the owner very well, I can probably get you a few runs in that '67 as a favor.
Vetmaniac, if you liked the difference between the Dart and Merlin, you're gonna love the CNC blocks - they're absolute works of art. My machinist said he's gotten .006 - .008 tool drift towards the bottom of the cylinders when boring aftermarket blocks and that's on a Rottler CNC Machining Center. Our local shop has a guy that's an absolute expert at honing these to get round, straight cylinders but it takes much more time than when working on the much softer production stuff. He does most of his work on Dart Big M and the new Brodix aluminum blocks and his experience really helps. I'd like to take you guys by the shop, may get lucky and get to watch a few dyno tugs on a 665. Lordy, those things make the power!
