Ok guys I want to build an engine and put it in my 80. I want something that will fit in the engine bay without to many problems. I have a buddy who is parting out a ZR-1 and he said he will sell me the engine if I want it. Now my question is, should I go with a big block,a 383 stroker, a crate engine, or the LT5??
I would also go for the ZZ4 crate engine and add the hot cam kit. I know three people with ZZ4s and they are all happy. One of the ZZ4s is in an S-10 that does 10.5 in the 1/4 mile with N2O.
Dont forget the trans when getting a engine spec'd up.
I have seen a cpl ppl have nice engines dropped in and not consider the transmission factor. They would drop in a 375+ hp engine with lopey cams etc... and then have a stock transmission melt down.
Find out what stall speed is recomended for your targeted hp range and what stall the cam will require also.
Theres nothing uglier than to see a sweet ride loping along like a monster @ idle and then watch it bog/hang while the rpm's try to get over the dead spot left by mismatched stall speeds.

Well my friend who will sell me the LT5 said he would sell me the engine, transmission and the gears. And BTW the engine is from a 94 ZR-1 I think, I know its one of the 405hp engines though.
I also like the idea of the LT5...I'll do it if you don't!
Hey if you want to do it go for it, I don't know if I am going to yet but it would be cool to have two LT5 powered Sharks show up at Bowling Green and tell GM thats the engine they should have put in the sharks.
That's a no brainer - 4 valves are the way to go. I don't know if any are left but a few months back they were selling new LT-5's for about $12K. I think that 7000 rpm and a 6 speed would be a good time. A local ZR-1 with mods and a 100 hp NO2 setup used to spank me out at the drag strip. But it is a hard car to keep going straight on the street.

$12K!? I think I should get that engine ASAP!!.But I am going to reitre my Shark as a daily driver and use it for a weekend car and a car to take to Vette meets and possibly one of the forum cruise ins so it wont be driven a lot with the ZR-1 engine.
A lt5 setup would be sweet. I have sen quite a few engine/trans packages on ebay lately from mom/pop junkyards & rebuild shops. The newer stuff is becoming ez'r / cheaper to get it seems. I had thought of going the new technology route on my 76, but I broke into a cold sweat at the thought of all the wiring etc.
I stare blankly at these new engines, lost from the get go. I feel alot more comfy knowing a old carb aspirated engine is under the hood.

Well my uncle is a mechanic and he said he would help me put in the tranny, engine and the new gears. He is the only person I trust to work on my cars, he is a car nut like me and he knows what he's doing. I have been trying to decide on buying another Vette ( C4 ) and using it for a daily driver or taking the money to buy the C4 with and get a new engine/tranny combo for my Shark. Right now I am leaning towards getting a new engine and tranny combo for the Shark.
Just called my buddy with the LT5 and he said I can pick it up in 30 minutes!! Well I guess it's off to the bank then pick up the new engine. I am so excited :D :D :D
The LT5 package sounds good, but spare parts are sometimes difficult to obtain. The only made a specific amount of these engines and only a limited amount of spare parts. It's my understanding Mercury Marine is no longer manufacturing spares of any type. If you go with the LT5, make sure the ocmputer is part of the deal.
