Default 68 Radiator core support question....

So what options are available on the '68 to get a larger aluminum radiator without swapping out the core support?
I plan on installing a built 383 in the next couple of months.

You can use the larger BB with AC type support that had the brass radiator and the fiberglass shroud, but that would require a support swap or at least a modification.

I am also interested in this answer. I got the Dewitts with the fan and controller. My car runs about 220 all the time fast, slow or still. I was told short of replacing the support I am stuck with what I have.

I'm confused. Have you already installed the Dewitts?

You shouldn't have to change the rad support. I'm using a DeWitts Direct-Fit made for the small-block, and stock fan for my 383. Keeps the temp at 180, even less on cooler days

Default I put in a 28" by 19" in my 68.

I got it from Summit. I removed the lower round-cushion brackets and used generic brackets to mount it. It fit with ~ 3/4" on each side.

Is this the one you purchased?

Default Nope, here's the one I bought....

I wouldn't go any bigger than 28 by 19.....

And here's the brackets I bought...had to modify them, but for what they cost it's simpler than going to find metal.

Yes, the Dewitts is already installed. I have a new high flow water pump new T-stat and fresh motor. I can only imagine what the temp would be without the Dewitts. I have checked the temp difference inlet to outlet with a temp gun and it is lowering the temp by about 20deg. The radiator support opening on a 68 small block is just to small to run a decent size rad. Thought about cutting the opening larger and making another larger radiator fit But I hate to just throw away a brand new good Dewitt rad.

Default I thought about cutting also...

but I decided to just install the radiator first. I have A/C and I have not overheated. I live on the coast so it isn't exactly hot, but even on warm days it runs just fine.
One of these days I'll take it to the desert. The 28 X 19 radiator is quite a bit larger than the little original aluminum radiator I removed. I was surprised how small the original was when I got it out.

The 68 was a little unique but not impossible. Assuming it was a small block core support (you didn't say) then there were two different models. First you had the manual/no air radiator which was aluminum (pin mount) and used a separate surge tank. GM 3155316 our #941 or A63M.

Then if the car got AC or Auto, GM changed it to a copper unit without surge tank. The radiator was the same copper/brass radiator they used for the 68 bb and it mounted on the U saddles. We would convert this to aluminum with a model A66 which uses a 22.5" core.

I have too many options to list here as far as up grades go, so if you are really interested in upgrading I suggest you call me and we'll run through all of them. 810-220-0181
