Ok, so I took the plunge. After seeing all the beautiful frame restorations on this site I decided to take my body off and give it a shot. D*** you all! J/K, actually it went pretty smoothly after I unbolted the seat belt mount.
Anyway my plan is to clean up all the looses scale and paint it with POR15. My question is this: what can I do about the inside of the frame. As I understand it these things can rust from the inside out. Short of drilling a lot of holes is there some way to rust proof it?
There are enough access holes in the frame to reach everywhere so you shouldn't have to drill any holes. Eastwood sells a rustproofing kit that has wands of different lengths for reaching into the frame. They also have a waxy coating that is supposed to stick to the inner frame and prevent moisture from getting to the metal. I also considered using chainsaw oil - it is a paraffin-based oil that will stick to the surface pretty well also.
I used a long wand and applied Rusfre inner panel coating. It is the waxy stuff that stays somewhat sticky. I put enough in until it started to drip out of the holes.

After spraying the POR-15 on the frame, whatever was left in the spray gun jar I set the paint gun for a narrow width and sprayed it into ever hole in the frame I could find.

The reason I used waste oil was because certain substances will actually trap moisture and accelerate rust
I am not familiar with POR-15 but I know that the basic undercoating spray you buy can hold in moisture.
you have "waste oil" after you change the oil in your car.
That's why the front half of a frame is not usually rusted, it's from all of the oil that
gets on the frame from oil changes, oil leaks, etc.. over the years.
The other products you can use are the Rust Converters, SEM makes one that does not require coating afterwards, it is called Rust-Seal.
You can use a wand and spray it in the frame holes. Availble at all autobdy supply stores.
What if you sprayed that airconditioning duct sealer from home depot into the frame? Comes in a spray can with a small straw, comes out like an oozing liquid but quickly expands to almost 7 times its size. Stick stuff and becomes a great sealant. Would that work if I sprayed that in my frame? might just take space and not really seal the inside metal from moisture...just a thought.
Still searching for something that I can spray in the frame to seal it from further rust. I have no way of getting the surface rust in there out. Ideas? products? what about eastwoods rubberized coating?
Spoke to someone at RustCheck and they recommended RustCheck Coat and Protect for inside the frame to be applied via a Shutz gun.
The Coat and Protect is a heavy gel that will work its way into the surface rust and any other debri within the frame and preserve the current state. It won't allow any more rusting to occur. Obviously they do a lot of this in Canada and apparently RustCheck is pretty popular. They just opened shops in the Pensylvania area that applies RustCheck to customer cars but doesn't retail the products.
Anyway, they said you don't want to seal the inside of the frame with anything with a hardner b/c as you drive the frame twists and would crack the hardner allowing moisture and rust to grow beneath the hardner. Makes sense.
So I have to find a way to order this stuff to the states and give it a shot. He mentioned I would only have to do this once every 2 or 3 yrs.
If you want more details e-mail me at doogie1101@hotmail.com and I'll share the info I have gained as well as what I will find out.
Good luck.
Whenever I have done a frame inside, I shoot it with Ospho, which stops the rust etc. Use a weedsprayer very liberally. Then shot the inside with the good Rustoleum thinned way down using a body shutz gun.
Then spray the outside of frame that has been sandblasted and prepped with ospho with the rustoleum in numerous coats to get complete coverage and a smooth finish.
Looks great and can be worked on later without fear of destroying a fancy expensive coating such as powder or epoxy. Also no worry of trapping moisture. Works for me.

In some parts of the northeast during the winter months they use to spread so much salt on the road its like driving down a gravel road
My new 77 El Camino had rust holes in 3-4 years when rustcheck came out I use to spray it inside the door shells and rear quarter panels...stopped the rust dead. I'm not selling the stuff...just a great product
