Default Throttle Cable Adjustment

Just installed a Holley SA carb on Performer Intake. I am using an aftermarket cable bracket. Looks like the cable is too long for this set up. I can't get full throttle.

Where should this be adjusted? I have the 'snap on' type connector on the carb, and there is no adjustment on it. Under the pedal seems like the only option. What is the best way to do this?

TIA

How long is too long? You could just tie a knot in the cable?

Can you post some pics? I had to install an aftermarket cable when I switched from Holley to Ed, and mine was too long. I just cut the cable to the length I needed and fabbed my own link. Please post pics of your problem.

Aamir, you need the factory throttle bracket that GM used in vettes that had Holleys, like 70-72 LT-1's. It allows you to use the factory throttle cable. I had one on my car, and it does work perfectly, you can borrow it until you buy your own if you wish.

Bracket is not an issue, it's the actual length of the cable. The bracket only holds the cable in place (correct?). Looks like the distance from the pedal to the linkage at carb is shorter now (by about 1"). I don't think any bracket out there will fix my problem. Bracket only holds the cable sleeve, right?

Bruce, thanks for the offer, but I would like to make mine work. You know how I am

Yes, the bracket holds the cable in place, but where it holds the cable could be the problem, a universal type bracket might not hold the cable in the same spot as the factory bracket. Maybe the '74 throttle cable is different, but the factory bracket worked with the factory cable on my car.

I know what Desi is saying...I had to go through the same thing. It'd be very easy for him to shorten the cable. It don't have to be a stock fitment so long as the cable attaches to the throttle linkage somehow and maintains a tight relationship. I fabbed mine, he can do the same easily.

It's even easier to buy the right bracket and bolt it on!

I just checked some of my catalogs, and it seems that the '74 throttle cable is a one year only part, so the factory Holley bracket might not work with it, but then again, the differences might be cosmetic only and it's possible it will work. Or you can go a totally different route, and buy a Lokar SS fully adjustable cable like I did:

I'm all for buying a pretty bracket...but at the time I wanted to drive it...not wait a week and drive it. Took me about five minutes to customize the cable connection.

Durango boy, where did you customize the cable? At the carb?

Bruce, the bracket I have is adjustable, BUT it does not change the cable length. It's the actual air-craft cable that is too long. I am going to cut the cable and install one of those crimps that you can buy at Home Depot. I know how to MAKE it work, I just wanted to see if there is something easier...

If you shorten the cable, you may not fully open the throttle. You really do need a different bracket - that will all ow MORE cable travel.

If the cable has enough throw then you need a bracket with alot of adjustment
I used this bracket from AutoZone on my 73' with the Street Avenger and the Edelbrock Performer and it worked perfect
Part No.: 6039
Price: $13.99
Theres a good 3" of adjustment with this bracket

Yes, it's at the carb. The end of the cable is secured in the end that came with the kit like usual, only I cut the cable, looped it, and re-tightened the set screw holding it into the loop. I cut almost 2" from the cable. It was a kit I bough at Autozone when I bought the carb.

Bob, I have a very similar bracket. It also has 3" adjustment on it. The only difference is, I paid $30 buck for mine (I live in Canada )

However, I just don't see how moving that bracket around would take the slack out of the air-craft cable. I will try to post some pics tomorrow...

BlackRat, what diameter cable are you looking for? I have a full spool, not sure about the diameter though. I will check tonight. Let me know, perhaps I have the same one you are looking for. I can mail some to you.

Hey BlackRat...while you're replacing the cable, you know to give it a good coating of powdered graphite or lithium huh? Makes for great cable lubricant.

That sucks! I didn't even actually read the instructions, it semed pretty straight forward to me at the time, so I just chucked them. You should try an industrial hardware supplier instead of the typical DIY places like Home Depot, I am sure you will find the proper diameter aircraft cable there.
