Default First start questions

I started the beast for the first time since building the new BB. The good news is it started in about 1/4 revolution.

However, the side pipes got hotter than ... pretty quickly. Oil pressure was good water flow was OK, timing was OK. Had to shut down for a fuel leak at the carb. After about 15 minutes of running at 2500 rpm sitting still with no hood, the temp was gradually moving up past 200 on the gauge.

I noticed that it sounded great with my ear-plugs in, but without them it sounded like a solid lifter engine (it has hyd lifters). Question: are the comp cams roller lifters (the stainless ones, not the aluminum) noisey?

I checked and the top end is getting oil (oil inside rocker covers and some flow visible when fill cap removed while running).

Anyone have comments or suggestions?

Sounds like you covered just about everything. I was going to say timing, but you covered that. But, if your valve lash is not set properly, that could also mimic an engine being out of time. Double check the static valve lash and then readjust it with the car running.
