Carb cleaner, starting fluid, the theory is the idle will raise when u hit the leak cause its temporarily closed. The sprays make it easy to get to hard to reach places.

I heard that if you can get it, ether is the best for this. Never done it....just what I heard.

starter fluid works but will make a mess. Propane works well. if you have a propane torch just turn the gas on but don't light it of course. If you are near a hose and the idle jumps up it's from the propane being sucked into the leaky hose.

I've never had a problem with starter fluid, it evaporates readily. As for the propane I thought that was only for the carb area and the manifold not for hoses?
Try isolating all vaccum that leaves the engine, shut it all off inlcuding the brake booster. Now check you vac reading, if it goes up then bring one system online at a time and watch for a decrease. The line with the decrease now gets further attention.
I have a brand new crate that only gets 13-14 inches. To even get it that hi I had to do everything with the vac gauge installed, carb adjustment, valve adjustment timing etc.

Should I remove the fan so with the engine running it doesn't blow the propane and/or starter fluid where I don't want it? Also, I don't follow how to check out a leak from the heads. Can someone be more detailed on that one --- how do you check out the lower area closest to the ground where the head meets the block ---- just pump a lot of oil along the seam or is there a better way.
It's raining in CT today an probably also tomorrow and since I want to do this type of thing outside, I guess it will have to wait unless we get a break in the weather.
Again --- thanks to all for your very fine suggestions

No Need as it wont be engaged unless you get it warm enough, It will just be free wheeling.
Before you start with the propane or other stuff, pinch off the main line off the back of the manifold and see if it helps
