Help please with Timing Problem

Default Help please with Timing Problem

Took my 80 to the car wash yesterday to clean up the engine compartment yesterday... It has been running GREAT for several months and now I wish I wouldn;t have done the wash.

After washing, it ran rough...so I took it home and checked the timing. Found that the distributor clamp was loose and it evidently moved which caused the inital problem. When I tried to set it back to where it wa (14 degrees before TDC) it began to run rough and would die...then not restart. So I backed off the timing and it would start and run...but the same when I tried to go back to 14.

Removed the distributor cap and found a lot of moisture and some corrosion on the rotor... So, I cleaned it up and took some light grit sand paper to the contacts in the cap and the rotor. also left it off over night so it could dry out.

Reassembled this morning...and now I'm getting a backfire out of the right side about every 10 seconds....

Removed the distibutor and checked everything out again...all looks good and reassembled...same thing... back fires about every 10 seconds (right side)...

The distributor is an MSD pro-billet driven by an MSD Blaster 2 coil...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Hi Ed,
Two things come to mind. You may have a carbon track inside the cap or possibly have two wires crossed.

I now wrap my dist in plastic and do not spray direct on it anymore. It has solved my after wash problems.

1 6 4 3 8 5 7 2

right?

No.
Firing order on a GM V8 is 18436572. It's printed on the intake manifold.

Not unless you have a different cam in it.
Try 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2, it should say that on your manifold.

Spray the cap and rotor with WD-40
It will remove any moisture

That was it! 6 and 8 reversed... runs very strong now! Thanks everyone...just in time to make an afternoon show at TGI Fridays.
